A special place to stay

Upper Barns is a beautifully converted Tudor Barn modestly tucked away along a small track in Wethersfield, with far reaching views of the open Essex countryside.

We have three double bedrooms, all with luxury en-suite shower or bathrooms. Each suite has its own special character, design and facilities, from the Mahogany suite with whirlpool bath, to the restful pale greens and mosaics of the Oak suite. In the morning, enjoy a full English Breakfast in the vaulted beamed Hall, over-looking the gardens.

History of the Barns

An historic listed building within the ancient parish of Wethersfield, part of the barn dates back as far as late Tudor times (1590). Timber-framed and weather-boarded, the central barn would have originally had a function as part of a working farm. Structural features of note in the Great Hall include curved tension bracing across jowled posts.

Over the years the barns have been extended and modernized, with a complete refurbishment of the bed and breakfast facilities in 2011.

Wethersfield is a village with a long history and has many listed buildings. It probably gets its name from a Viking invader named Wuthha or Wotha, whose 'field' or clearing it was. The village green is at the centre of the village with several plane trees towering above.
